The Challenge
South Lakes Citizens Advice (SLCA) is an independent organisation specialising in confidential information and advice to assist people with legal, debt, consumer, housing and other problems in the United Kingdom.
SLCA is located on a busy road in the centre of Kendal, and contacted NAQTS to provide indoor air quality monitoring and advice for how they could manage potential airborne virus transmission risks without significantly increasing ingress from outdoor air pollution.
The Solution
NAQTS visited SLCA and deployed three V2000 monitors to provide a detailed analysis of the indoor air quality. NAQTS focused on carbon dioxide (CO2) as it is as useful measurement to characterise potential airborne virus transmission as it is a proxy for ventilation. This is because when indoors CO2 is primarily from exhaled breath. As well as emitting CO2, when someone breathes they also emit particles that deposit on surfaces (droplets) or remain suspended in the air (aerosols). By measuring CO2 we can infer the rate at which indoor aerosols would be removed by ventilation.
Outcomes
NAQTS provided SLCA with a bespoke report detailing CO2 concentrations in the building, real-world ventilation rates, and advice on how to minimise the likelihood of any airborne virus transmission. This included advice on the deployment of portable air cleaner, which was tailored to the occupancy and dimensions of the building.
